Artist Statement: My artmaking is a pursuit of beauty and a meditation on change. Through the interplay of personal experience and collective consciousness, I explore themes of solitude, liminality and impermanence. Observational art-making serves as my foundation for understanding these themes, allowing me to interpret both internal and external realities. I create works that navigate the space between direct representation and dreamlike imagery, seeking to capture moments of the sublime in everyday experience. Drawing from art history, mythology, and contemporary culture, my practice creates dialogues between past and present, personal and universal. Working primarily in oil painting and drawing, I employ traditional methods to investigate and reflect upon the human condition and the nature of existence. This methodical approach to observation and creation becomes both a way of seeing and a form of contemplation.
Winning Entry: “Still Life by the Sea”
Materials: Oil on Canvas
Artist’s Note: Nothing lasts forever. Yet as humans, we attempt to preserve moments and feelings through the alchemy of art. My artistic practice, and this painting specifically, is a meditation on the interplay of permanence and impermanence. Against the backdrop of the vast sea and sky, a vase of lilies in a state of metamorphosis becomes a symbol of fragility faced with the sublime.
